NOLA Gold will face a tough test as the undefeated, league-leading San Diego Legion come to town Saturday, Feb 29 at 3 p.m. in the Shrine on Airline.
The San Diego Legion have started off the season on a tear, with last year’s runner-ups defeating the defending champion Seattle Seawolves in the first game 33-24, before knocking off the Colorado Raptors, 49-22, and the New England Free Jacks, 30-21.
The Gold are coming off a 27-20 win on the road against the Colorado Raptors.
Defense will be critical for the Gold going against the Legion who have had the number one scoring offense in MLR through three games. The Legion have scored at least four tries in each of their first three games.
The Gold will look in part this game to center Carl Meyer after his massive performance against the Colorado Raptors, putting up 17 points with two tries, two made conversions and a made penalty kick.
The Legion had a balanced attack against the Free Jacks with four different players all scoring tries. Wing Tira Patterson was one of the try-scorers in that game, gaining 101 meters to go along with the try he scored.
A win would be big for the Gold as, while they currently sit in second, the Eastern Conference is a close race with the second-place team through the fifth-place team are all within one point of each other.
The Legion have a big early lead in the Western Conference already having seven points more than the Utah Warriors in second place.
After the game against the Legion, the Gold will stay home for the game the following week against the New England Free Jacks, Saturday, March 7 at 3 p.m. in the Shrine on Airline.
